My gay character...

Okay, well, I write. Like, a ton. And I've been working on this story for a while that is actually a novel, only I hesitate to call it that because chances are it'll never be finished. But anyway... I went ahead and made one of my main characters a lesbian. I was just wondering, could I get away with not going very much into it? I have her being called a dyke by some jerk in just about the first chapter, but I wasn't going to have one of the other characters reflecting on it in that exposition-y way, like, "After Alyssa had come out to them a year ago..." My idea was to have both of her friends be totally fine with it, and to not really even think about it much, because it was just a part of her. I mean, "When Alyssa had been blonde......" would never happen. But still, being gay would be a significant part of someone... so, I don't know. Do people think I could get away with not going into it very much? (At the beginning, at least... Later, one of her friends falls for her, and I'm considering even having them kiss on some instinct, but that'd probably be a bit contrived and unrealistic... but that's a completely different story. Ahem.) So, yeah. Feedback appreciated. Anyone willing to beta-read what I have so far is totally welcome to and insanely loved and appreciated... I promise it's fairly good quality--I know how to use commas, at the very least. Shoot me an e-mail/IM/something.
