"Wicked" - comparing the book to the musical
what does everyone think of the changes made to the stage adaption of Wicked? personally i like the political climate and the characters in the book much more. Dr Dillamond is killed, which is a much stronger statment than what happens to him on stage! however, i love the stage adaption, and i totally understand that changes had to be made. what does everyone else think?

i've not seen the play
but i've listened to the soundtrack dozens of times, and i have read up on it on wikipedia.
Personally. I like the book more. Some of my friends were turned off by how political it became in the second half, but i quite enjoyed the intrigue.
I wanna read the sequel.

I'm a huge fan of the book;
I'm a huge fan of the book; I read it before seeing the play, and I like it better than the play. I like the book because there's more to think about, it leaves more to be ambiguous, it offers very few answers, and it's just so... freaking... dark. I've read it... at least 5 times, and the sequel 2 or 3 times.
I do, however, love the play, and have seen it twice, own the script, can recite most of it. First of all, it has Idina Menzel (at least it does in London. Did on Broadway.) I like the fact that it was made accesible to more people, younger people. I love the music, and I'm glad that it still holds its central values. And while I disagree with many of the changes made, I understand that it'd be impossible to keep the story the same for the stage production.
Be yourself. Because if you're busy being someone else, then who's gonna be you?

the musical was amazing, though that was pretty much just because i'm like, in love with Eden Espinosa, and she was my Elphaba. Kendra Kassenbaum and Jenna Leigh Green were good Galinda and Nessa, respectively, but Spanish Harlem (aka Eden) rocks my socks
what people need to realize though, is that the book and the show are two completely different things. and probably the movie too, if and when they make one. Like, the absence of Avaric, Pfannee and ShenShen is okay, they arent really necessary characters to the main plot. Neither was her brother Shell.
Also, considering the length of the book, the show only covers the second and third sections of the book, and a little bit of the end as well.
Unfortunately, they also took out the wonderful lesbian subtext between Elphaba and Glinda. Winnie Holzman, who wrote the book for the show, wanted it to be about their relationship, but Stephen Schwartz disagreed, due to the homophobia that still exists on Broadway. Which i must say, is very ironic.

I don't like how Elphaba
I don't like how Elphaba gets a happy ending in the play. She doesn't die and meet Fiyero in heaven or whatever she just dies. But I guess I can't really compare them because my parents not me have seen the play. The book was amazing though.

I got totally mad at the end
I got totally mad at the end of the show. I literally ranted my way out of there. Five minutes later, I was gushing about it, but still. I got mad. The second time I saw it, I left the theater right before Fiyero entered in the last scene and finished sobbing. I liked it far better the second time.
Whatever I did, I didn't do it.

Son of a Witch was so-so. not nearly as intriguing as the the first. though, the abundance of boyslash was pretty awesome.

I haven't seen the play, but
I haven't seen the play, but I absolutely LOVE the book, and I bought the soundtrack to the musical recently. Does anybody know where you can get a tape of the play? I'm probably not going to be able to see it performed anytime soon.
I could figure out most of the storyline from the lyrics in the soundtrack, but there's one thing I really want to know. What happened to Doctor Dillamond on stage? I didn't know that he wasn't killed in the musical like he was in the book. Would somebody please tell me? I'm dying to know! (no pun intended)
I like the song "What is This Feeling?" on the soundtrack, which is sung by Galinda and Elphaba. I think it's funny, because even though it's all about how much Galinda and Elphaba hate each other so much when they first meet, if somebody changed a few of the words in it, it would make a really good lesbian love song.
For example, this part of the song sound like something from a love song:

Should I rewrite all of this song, so that it makes Galinda and Elphaba sound like they're in love with each other? I don't know if anyone else is interested or not. I know it's kind of a crazy idea. :)

The first time I heard
The first time I heard anything having to do with Wicked, I was in the car with my friend and we got to my house right before they went all, "Yeeeessss.... loathing!" So I only heard the part that's all lovey.
Needless to say, that's when I fell in love.
Y'know Gregory Maguire is gay?

Hmm....
I didn't read the book. But I really wasn't into the musical, either. I did see it in previews in San Francisco, in its run before broadway, so they may have changed it alot between here and NYC. They must have, because I can't imagine it doing as well as it did based on what I saw.
I mean, it was a fine show, good sets, great acting, characters, the whole Rosencrantz and Guilderstern Are Dead meets the Wizard of Oz thing, fine. But the songs? Blah... I couldn't hum a single melody within three minutes of seeing the show, which is a bad sign for a musical.
Given the choice, I'll always go with a weaker book and strong songs (see today's review of Company) than a strong book and weak songs.
